Overview

A manufacturer of open and closed die forgings of carbon and alloy steel, micro-alloy steel, and stainless-steel forgings. They are supplying to various sectors like Automotive, Railways, Farm Equipment, Bearings, Oil & Gas, Power, and Construction, and Earth Moving & Mining applications. The die is supplied as Forged + Heat Treated + Machined and Fully assembled condition as per the requirement.

The manufacturer was facing an issue of uneven coating, hard residue deposition, and components sticking to the die. Also, while operating, smoke with a pungent smell was being generated.

The customer reached out to Molygraph for a solution and our technical experts suggested GRAPHOL GFL 6000 PLUS which is a high-performance graphite-based hot forging die lubricant.

    • Method Of Lubrication: Manual spray gun connected to 200L mixed lubricant in drum
    • Dilution Ratio: 1:8 with water
    • Billet Temp: 1280°C
    • Die Temp: 180°C

Key Challenges:

    • Smokeless performance at high temperature
    • No deposition of lubricant on the edges of die
    • Lubricant able to withstand high temperatures
    • No wear and corrosion of dies

Molygraph offered a consultative trial in the customer’s plant to demonstrate the performance under actual operating conditions. The recommended solution is GRAPHOL® GFL 6000 PLUS specialty die lubricant with the following properties.

    • The low mean particle size of graphite (5-6 microns)
    • Suitable for medium to heavy-duty forgings
    • Provides excellent metal flow
    • Good release and lubricity
    • Extends die life

Result

    • During the initial test run on the 2 Press Forge Machine with GRAPHOL® GFL 6000 PLUS, the customer observed that the earlier challenges faced were successfully resolved. There were no issues of sticking, residue deposition, or smoke generation.
    • After a long trial of 7 months, the product has been horizontally and vertically deployed.
    • Molygraph with its on-time delivery became the preferred supplier.
